Birding the Adirondacks:
Teddy Roosevelt Bird Walk

Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Heron Marsh Trail, the Silviculture Trail, and the Barnum Brook Trail on 8 May 2013. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 9:00 AM, when we met in the VIC building at the Paul Smith's College VIC. It was a warm spring day with plenty of sunshine. We saw or heard a total of 28 birds. Highlights of the walk included numerous first-of-season Black-throated Blue Warblers and many first-of-season Magnolia Warblers.

In the parking lot and near the VIC building, we saw or heard the following birds:

American Robin	Ovenbird
Northern Parula	Purple Finch
Northern Flicker	American Robin
Chipping Sparrow	Black-throated Green Warbler
Ruffed Grouse	Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Blue-headed Vireo	Yellow-rumped Warbler
Nashville Warbler	Black-capped Chickadee
Winter Wren

On the Heron Marsh Trail,we saw or heard the following birds:

Turkey Vulture	Mallard
Swamp Sparrow	Red-winged Blackbird
White-throated Sparrow	Purple Finch
Nashville Warbler	Yellow-rumped Warbler
Magnolia Warbler	European Starling
Ring-Necked Duck	Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Black-capped Chickadee	Golden-crowned Kinglet
Winter Wren	Blue-headed Vireo
Belted Kingfisher	Palm Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler	Ovenbird
Hermit Thrush

On the Woods and Waters Trail floating bridge, we saw or heard the following birds:

Ring-Necked Duck	Black-capped Chickadee
Red-Breasted Nuthatch	Mallard

On the Barnum Brook Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Winter Wren	Mallard
Red-winged Blackbird	Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Black-capped Chickadee

We also observed an increasing number of spring wildflowers and shrubs in bloom, including an unusual yellow mutation of the Purple Trillium on the Heron Marsh Trail:
